Consultant Cardiac Surgeon. Birmingham

The Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham has been recently built centrally within the UKs second city and is ideally co-located within University and Research Park. It is a major trauma centre and houses the Royal Centre for Defence Medicine.

Applications are invited for a Consultant Cardiac Surgeon with an interest in aortic surgery to join the existing team to enable further development of the established aortic surgical programme as well as contribute to the general cardiac surgical service. The Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham delivers a full range of cardiac surgical specialities, including cardiopulmonary transplantation, major aorto-vascular surgery, specialist mitral valve surgery and device related ventricular support. We are also a major participant in the National Organ Retrieval Service.

Recent service reconfiguration is expected to lead to a significant uplift in caseload over the next few months and you will form part of a team providing conventional elective and emergency cardiac surgery. In addition a specialist interest would be welcomed.

You should be fully trained in cardiac surgery and either on or eligible to be on the GMC specialist register or be within 6 months of the interview date.

In addition to a clinical workload of surgical sessions, out-patient clinics and ward-based activity, you will be expected to participate in a 1:7 on-call rota for general cardiac surgical emergencies and cardiothoracic trauma. In addition commitment to participate in transplantation and mechanical support surgery will be desirable
