Cardiovascular Surgery Critical Care Fellowship
Cardiovascular Surgery Department
Institut Clínic Cardiovascular
Hospital Clínic – University of Barcelona

The Department of Cardiovascular Surgery at Hospital Clínic at University of Barcelona seeks candidates for a Cardiovascular Critical Care Fellowship. Duration of this program extends to 1-2 years depending on previous experience. The Fellow will direct management of patients on the Cardiovascular Surgery ICU under the supervision of the Fellowship Director, ICU coordinator and Attending Cardiovascular Surgeons.

The Fellow is expected to make rounds on all postoperative cardiac and vascular surgery patients and be available for consultation. When on duty the physician will be available to respond to calls from other healthcare providers at the Hospital and involve the Attending Surgeon appropriately in the decision making. This position is open to physicians with the desire to learn to become independent in the care of this subgroup of patients and is open to Cardiovascular Surgeons, Anesthetists, Cardiologists and Intensive Care Physicians,

During the fellowship the trainee will receive training on echocardiography under the direction and supervision of the Department of Echocardiography at Hospital Clínic and proficiency will be gained on postoperative echocardiography evaluation. Expertise will be achieved in mechanical ventilation for this subset of patients through the guidance of Attending Surgeons and Anesthesiology colleagues and will include basic bedside bronchoscopy skills. From a surgical skills standpoint this fellowship will be devoted to ICU critical care and related procedures: including venous and arterial line insertion, pulmonary artery catheterization, fasciotomies, chest tube insertion, bedside reexploration, IABP, tracheostomy (open and percutaneous) and ECMO related techniques.

The program will offer exposure to cardiovascular processes including ECMO, mechanical circulatory support, cardiac transplantation, minimally invasive cardiac surgery, complex aortic surgery and the generality of our specialty.

Research in cardiovascular ICU care is encouraged through the possibilities that a 16 bed ICU can offer. Prospective studies can be developed and lead by the Fellow with Departmental support and supervision. Publication of clinical outcomes and clinical research will be expected. The possibility to develop a project that culminates in a PhD Thesis exists under the umbrella of the University of Barcelona (http://www.ub.edu/medicina/doctorat/programa-medicina/es/index.htm) and guided by the cardiovascular surgery staff members.

Qualifications include a license to practice medicine in Spain and particularly in Barcelona. A good Spanish level is highly preferable.

Funding will be available through and based on the in house call involvement. The income will be proportional to undertaken calls. External grant support is highly desirable but not mandatory.

The Cardiovascular Surgery Department is an equal opportunity employer. Fellows from different countries are encouraged to apply for the fellowship.

A successful candidate will obtain extensive clinical training in this area of Cardiovascular Care and will have the opportunity to work with a dynamic, protective and enthusiastic group.
